The season of Lent is an annual opportunity to live our life as Christians in a more visible way. We are provided with opportunities to fine tune the disciplines of the spiritual life in a more concrete way. We are offered ways to rekindle the responsibility of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Perhaps we fall short throughout the year, but the practices of Lent are clear and obvious ways to live the Christian ideal. The practices of Lent are not intended for 40 days alone. We are challenged to follow Christ in a deeper way. That practice of deepening is a means of transformation that lasts beyond the celebration of Easter. It offers new life beyond a time or season and prepares us for the eternal living of our Christ-life in time and eternity.
